Blog for Week 1/27/15 Poetry Response

The poem "Caged Bird" by Maya Angelou was the most interesting. This poem is about a depressed bird that has been in a cage its whole entire life. This bird talks about life and how it is be tortured and just wants to be free. I think that when the bird says it opens its throat to sing that is the last thing it can do because it is limited or tortured that all it can do is sing. This is talking about how sometimes when you are not in the best or lowest part of your life, you have to make it though it and hold on.

I think the author chose to write this poem because she might have been through rough times and wanted to get it out through a poem. I think this is a good way to get you feelings out because there are really no rules to writing and they can just say what they want. I know that this is a really deep poem because Maya Angelou was living during the slavery time, she is known as a very famous poet.

This poem has a text to world connection because everyone has had a deep or really low moment in their life. This poems is about learning how to get through those moments. It also talks about how when you do overcome these adversities, the reward after is the best feeling ever. Imagine how the bird feels being free after being locked up in a caged with its wings and its feet tied up and finally being free, that feeling is priceless.

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

  1. Great job expelling the poem. I also agree that poetry is the best way an author can express feelings.
